Job Summary
Performs tissue recovery and organ preservation processes for the purposes of transplantation and/or research. Responsible for the proper storage, labeling and coordinating transportation and the subsequent decontamination and sterilization of all surgical instruments used during recoveries. The PRT provides post:case follow up on all preserved organs and maintains a database documenting all aspects of the preservation process and transplant outcomes.
Essential Functions
:Performs aseptic recovery of tissue for transplantation and research.
:Performs donor organ preservation using appropriate machines; cannulates and places kidneys on preservation machines as approved by the surgical director.
:Performs donor evaluations; coordinates logistics for recovery team and communicates with Medical Examiners as required.
:Troubleshoots any clinical error indicators during the perfusion process and reports to surgeons and other members of the transplant community.
:Receives training as required by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS); networks with research centers to offer organs and tissues to researchers; manages process; provides ongoing training to ancillary staff regarding research recovery. Provides in:service education to LifeShare staff; conducts education to other System departments as requested.
:Records pathology results and organ anatomy and reports this to transplant surgeons and transplant centers.
:Provides accurate information to staff, regarding anatomy, perfusion characteristics and laboratory data on all mechanically perfused organs.
:Prepares, monitors and removes organs from pulsatile perfusion equipment.
:Assures that all legal documents are in the donor chart at the completion of the case and all documents related to the case are distributed to appropriate agencies; maintains donor and tissue records as required; obtains post donor follow up as requested; specifically obtaining and reporting cultures and serology results, final pathology reports, autopsy reports and death certificates.
:Collaborates with the organ recovery coordinators and transplant surgeons in a way that assures the best possible outcome in organs and tissues recovered for transplant and research.
:Reassesses best practices of the organ and tissue industry in order to recommend to leadership the need for recovery, procedure and/or supply changes.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. Employee may be required to do some lifting, moving, pushing, or pulling; sit, stand, or bend for an extended period of time. Established procedures identify the precautions and/or equipment that should be used when performing this task. Must have good manual dexterity and visual acuity. Must be able to endure long periods of standing and walking. Must be able to endure irregular sleep patterns.
Education, Experience and Certifications
HS diploma or equivalent required. Certified Pulsatile Perfusion Technologist (CPT) required within two years of employment. Knowledge of abdominal and thoracic anatomy required. Clinical competence in the dissection of kidneys to permit transplantation, obtaining biopsy samples, suturing biopsy sites, obtaining and relaying kidney anatomy information to organ recovery coordinators and transplant surgeons required. Experience in the field of organ preservation preferred. Surgical Technician, EMT, CTBS, CEBT, CST, ST, ORT, or a LPN preferred. Operating room experience preferred. Basic understanding of kidney anatomy, surgical dissection technique, suturing, vascular surgery, cellular metabolism and laboratory values within six months of empl
